How to Check and Replace the Spark Plug on Your Troy-Bilt 4-Cycle String Trimmer

If your spark plug is fouled in any way, it can cause your equipment to be unable to start. Replacing the spark plug is a relatively inexpensive, quick, and easy task that can end your frustrations.

Before servicing any power equipment, follow the safety instructions laid out in your owner's manual. Make sure the equipment is completely stopped, cooled down, and that no parts are moving before attempting to service your equipment.

  • Step 1: Stop the engine. Allow several minutes for the engine to cool down.
  • Step 2: Grap the spark plug boot and firmly pull it off of the spark plug.
  • Step 3: Clean the area that's around the spark plug.
  • Step 4: Remove the spark plug using a 5/8 inch socket turning counterclockwise.
  • Step 5: Look to see if the spark plug is cracked, fouled, or dirty. If any of these symptoms are present, replace it with part number 79400043.
  • Step 6: Set the air gap at 0.025 inches using a feeler gauge.
  • Step 7: Install the new spark plug into the cylinder head.
  • Step 8: Tighten the spark plug using a 5/8 inch socket until it's snugly fit.
  • Step 9: Reattach the boot.

A dirty or damaged air filter can cause irreversible engine damage if not regularly inspected, cleaned, and replaced when needed. Air filters are often very affordable fixes for a variety of different small engine problems.

  • Step 1: Completely unscrew and remove the air filter cover.

Checking the Oil

  • Step 1: Stop the engine and allow it to cool off for several minutes.

  • Step 3: Look at the oil level window. The oil should fill the window halfway.
  • Step 4: If the oil is below halfway, clean the space around the oil filling plug.
  • Step 5: Unscrew the oil filling plug.
  • Step 6: Add oil until the its level reaches halfway up the oil level window.
  • Step 7: Screw in the oil filling plug.

Changing the Oil

  • Step 1: Clean the space around the oil filling plug.
  • Step 2: Unscrew the oil filling plug.
  • Step 3: Tip the engine up so that the oil pours out of the fill hole and into a container that is suitable for holding the oil.
  • Step 4: Properly dispose of the oil oil.
  • Step 5: Add 2.03 fl. oz. (60 ml) of SAE 30 oil into the filling hole.
  • Step 6: Reinstall the oil filling plug.

How to Replace the Trimming Line of Your Troy-Bilt 4-Cycle String Trimmer

Replenishing your trimming line is often an annoying yet necessary task to deal with when trimming on a regular basis. Make sure you're properly reequipping your trimmer with new trimmer line to avoid clogs, tangles, and other future problems.

  • Step 1: Remove old trimming line and any other obstructions from the trimmer head.
  • Step 2: Cut a section of trimming line that is approximately 20 feet (6 meters) in length.
  • Step 3: Turn the bump knob clockwise until the arrows are aligned.
  • Step 4: Place the new trimming line into the entry eyelet.
  • Step 5: Guide the line through the cutting head until a few inches are sticking out of the opposite eyelet.
  • Step 6: Pull the trimming line coming out of the opposite eyelet until there is about 10 feet of trimming line on each side of the trimmer head.
  • Step 7: Turn the bump knob clockwise and wind the line until there are only about 5 inches sticking out of each side. Don't push down on the bump knob while you're winding the line.

  • Step 5: Line up the tabs on the spool cover with the out spool's holes.
  • Step 6: Place the cover on the outer spool until the tabs snap in place.
