How to Install an Ariens Heated Hand Warmer Kit on Your Ariens Snow Blower

The following instructions are for the Ariens #72100800 heated hand grip kit, which is for models 921012 (serial no. 3501 & up), 921013, 921015, 921016, 921305, 921306, 921307, 921311, and 921312. Before attempting to install this kit or work on/with your equipment in anyway, always refer to your owner's manual for safety information.

Required Tools

  • Utility Knife
  • Adjustable Wrench

Removing the Wiring Harness

  1. Stop the engine.
  2. Allow the unit to come to a complete stop and to cool down.
  3. Detach the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
  4. Disconnect the wire harness from the halogen light.
  5. Locate the wire harness ties that are on the handlebars. Cut them off.
  6. Pull the push pin out of the engine anchor.
  7. Disconnect the wire harness from the engine.

NOTE: Do not remove the flange at the base of the switch mounting hole

Installing the Switch

  1. Cut and remove the decal that is covering the switch mounting hole.
  2. Put the .563 x .040 internal locking washer onto the top of the switch.
  3. Line up the thread gap on the switch with the alignment flange.
  4. Use the .50 x .875 x .024 flat steel washer and nut (included with switch) to secure the switch in place.
  5. Tighten the nut with with your adjustable wrench.

Hand Grip Installation

IMPORTANT: The unit and Loctite epoxy must be between 45 degrees and 80 degrees during installation and curing in order for epoxy to work properly

  1. Cut the current hand grips off of the handlebars and discard them.
  2. Insert the tube cap into the handlebar ends.
  3. Apply one full package of Loctite epoxy evenly throughout the inside of the hand grip.
  4. Slide the hand grip on to the handlebar while rotating the grip around the tube to help evenly distribute the epoxy. Once the hand grips have been inserted completely, position them so that the wire and the standoff are facing inward toward the dash.
  5. Route the wire through the handlebars and below the dash.

IMPORTANT: Follow instructions on epoxy packet for proper mixing and application methods. Make sure to get all of the epoxy inside the hand grip. Open only one package of epoxy at a time. The tube caps have a pin hole to allow for air escape and ease of assembly. Should you encounter any difficulty while sliding the grip onto the handlebar, simply open or enlarge the pin hole to allow the air to escape. Allow the epoxy to cure for 24 hours before using the unit.

Installing the Wire Harness.

  1. Connect the new harness to the engine.
  2. Insert the push pin into the engine anchor, and then attach the ties to the handlebars.
  3. Plug in the halogen light and insert the cable harness push pins into the mounts above the light.
  4. Connect the wire harness to the right and left hand grip wires and to the on/off switch.
  5. Make sure the wires do not interfere with any moving parts or pinch points. Use the additional cable ties or electrical tape to secure the wires underneath the dash wherever necessary.
  6. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.

Operation

  1. Start engine and flip the switch up.
  2. Wait a few minutes and verify that the handle grips begin to warm up.
  3. If the handlebars do not begin to get warm, turn off the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
  4. Disconnect the spark plug wire and check all connections to ensure proper installation.

How to Adjust the Traction Drive Clutch on Your Ariens Power Brush

Separate the brush assembly and frame and remove the attachment drive belt from the engine sheave in order to change traction drive belt.
Make sure that you are supporting the frame and brush assembly when you begin to loosen the cap screws that are holding the frame and brush assembly together.

These instructions are specifically for the Ariens 921 series brushes. Always consult and be familiar with your owner's manual for information specific to your unit. Take the proper safety precautions laid out in your manual when working on your equipment.

  1. Remove attachment drive belt.
  2. Remove the swing gate spacer so that the drive plate can be brought up and over until the finger is out of the frame and the drive plate can swing past the stop hole in the frame.
  3. Pull the idler away from the traction drive belt.
  4. Remove the belt from the idler, crankshaft pulley and driven pulley.
  5. Replace traction drive belt.
  6. Move the drive plate toward the friction disc until the finger is in the stop hole in the frame.
  7. Reinstall the swing gate spacer.
  8. Check to make sure that the drive plate spring remains connected to the frame and drive plate.

  9. Replace the attachment drive belt.

How to Replace the Attachment Drive Belt on Your Ariens Power Brush

Inspect all aspects of your machine to ensure that it is operating as intended. Belts can often become stretched, torn, and worn. A damaged belt can cause greater damage to a piece of equipment if left unattended.

These instructions are specifically for the Ariens 921 series brushes. Always consult and be familiar with your owner's manual for information specific to your unit. Take the proper safety precautions laid out in your manual when working on your equipment.

  1. Turn the engine off.
  2. Disconnect spark plug wire. Allow your unit to cool down completely.
  3. Remove the hardware that is attaching the remote trigger cable to the brush assembly.
  4. Unscrew and remove the two screws that are securing the belt cover to the unit.
  5. Remove the belt cover.
  6. Remove the cap screws that are mounting the belt finger to engine.
  7. Remove the belt finger.
  8. Take the attachment drive belt off of the engine sheave. To do this, you may have to turn the engine sheave using the recoil starter handle).
  9. Provide support to the frame and housing.
  10. Unscrew and remove the two cap screws on each side that are securing the brush assembly to the frame.
  11. Detach the brush assembly from the unit.
  12. Lower the handlebar onto the floor.
  13. Take the attachment drive belt off of the lower pulley.
  14. Put the new belt onto the lower pulley. Hold the brake out of way and tip unit together.
  15. Reattach the cap screws to secure the brush assembly to frame.
  16. Place the belt onto engine sheave.
  17. Remount the belt finger.
  18. Engage the clutch lever. The belt finger that is on the opposite side of the the belt idler must be less than 1/8 in. (3.18 mm) from the belt, but not touching the belt. If it is touching, belt grabbing can occur which will cause the impeller to rotate while the attachment clutch is not engaged.

  19. Adjust clutch if needed.
  20. Reattach the belt cover and secure it with the cap screws that were previously removed.

How to Adjust the Speed Selector on Your Ariens Power Brush

Inspecting and adjusting all major components of your unit should always be a part of your maintenance routine. Ensuring that the speed selector on your Ariens power brush is working correctly will prevent you from being unable to move and correctly operate your unit.

To inspect and, if needed, adjust the speed selector on your Ariens power brush, follow the steps listed below.

These instructions are specifically for the Ariens 921 series brushes. Always consult and be familiar with your owner's manual for information specific to your unit. Take the proper safety precautions laid out in your manual when working on your equipment.

  1. Detach the adjustment pivot pin from the speed selector arm. Keep any hardware that you remove and set it aside.
  2. Set the speed selector that is located on the dash panel to the fastest forward speed position.
  3. Rotate the speed selector arm downwards toward the ground until it is as far down as it will go.
  4. Guide the adjustment pivot pin along the shift rod until you see that it is aligned with the hole that is on the speed selector arm.
  5. Using the hardware that you removed in step 1, attach the adjustment pivot pin to the speed selector arm.
  6. Test your unit and check both the forward and reverse speeds. To do so:
  7. a. Start the engine.
    b. Shift the speed selector into the first forward speed setting.
    c. Engage the traction clutch and your unit should begin to move forward.
    d. Stop the unit.
    e. Shift the speed selector into the first reverse speed setting.
    f. Engage the traction clutch and make sure your unit is moving backward.
    g. Turn off the engine.

  8. Make any adjustments to the pivot pin on the shift rod that are necessary for your unit to move forward when speed selector is in first forward position and move backward when speed selector is in first reverse position.
  9. Connect the pivot pin to the speed selector arm with the hardware removed in step 1 if any adjustments are to be made.

How to Replace the Friction Disc on Your Ariens Power Brush

Ensure that your friction disc is in good condition and operating properly so that you're able to fully operate your unit when the snow finally starts to come around. Follow the steps below to both remove and replace the friction disc on your Ariens power brush.

These instructions are specifically for the Ariens 921 series brushes. Always consult and be familiar with your owner's manual for information specific to your unit. Take the proper safety precautions laid out in your manual when working on your equipment.

Separate the brush assembly and the frame before attempting to replace the friction disc.

  1. Turn the engine off.
  2. Disconnect the spark plug wire. Allow the unit to cool down completely.
  3. On a level surface, tip the frame over onto its front.
  4. Remove both of the wheels from the unit.
  5. Remove the six hex bolts that are securing the bottom cover of the unit. Remove the cover.
  6. Take the pivot pin out from the speed selector arm. Make sure you keep all removed hardware for reinstallation.
  7. Remove the spring clip pin that is closest to the drive sprocket from the hex shaft.
  8. Remove the left bearing flange from the frame.
  9. Slide the hex shaft leftward to remove the pinion sprocket and the friction disc assembly from the hex shaft.
  10. Take the friction disc assembly off of the frame.
  11. Remove the three screws that are holding the friction disc onto the carrier bearing.
  12. Remove the old friction disc.
  13. Replace the old friction disc with the new friction disc, cup side to carrier bearing.
  14. Reinstall the three screws that you removed in step 10 into the new friction disc and the carrier bearing. Torque to 5 –6 lbf-ft. (6.8 – 8.13 N•m).
  15. Insert the new friction disc assembly into the frame.
  16. Install the washers onto the carrier bearing and slide into speed selector arm.
  17. Insert the new hex shaft through the new friction plate assembly.
  18. Install the pinion sprocket onto the hex shaft and insert the shaft into the right bearing.
  19. Use the hardware that you removed in step 6 to install the left bearing.
  20. Reinstall the clip pin into the hex shaft.
  21. Connect the pivot pin to the speed selector arm.
  22. Reinstall the bottom cover and the screws that secure it.
  23. Reinstall the wheels onto the unit.
  24. Pull the unit back into its normal operating position.
  25. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
  26. Adjust traction drive clutch.
