How to Operate an MTD String Trimmer

To start the trimmer:

  • Check the oil level in the crankcase
  • Fill the gas tank with unleaded, fresh, gasoline
  • Make sure the on/off stop control in the on position
    • If the engine is cold (below 40°F) flip the cold weather switch down to start/closed position, do NOT flip this switch down if it is over 40°
  • Completely press and release the primer bulb 10 times, slowly press the bulb until you see fuel in the fuel lines
  • Do not squeeze the throttle control, but put the unit into the starting position
  • Pull the starter rope out until you feel some resistance, usually around pulls 2-4
  • Pull the rope out steadily and quickly
  • Repeat this about 5 times, the engine should start.
  • If the engine starts and it is cold, flip the cold weather lever
  • If the engine starts, squeeze the throttle control to warm up the engine for 15-30 seconds in cold weather 30-60 seconds

To stop the trimmer:

  • Release your hand from the throttle control and allow the engine to cool down by idling
  • Switch the on/off stop control into the “off” position

Holding the trimmer:

  • With a slightly bent right arm, your right hand should be holding the shaft grip
  • Your left arm should be straight, and the left hand will be holding the j-handle
  • The unit should be held at waist level
  • Be sure the cutting attachment is parallel to the ground so that it can contact the grass without having to bend over

Adjust the trimmer line length:

  • With the trimmer running at a high speed, bump the trimmer head against the ground to release 1” of trimmer string

Trimming Tips:

  • Operate unit at full throttle for best trimming results
  • Always hold the cutting attachment parallel to the ground
  • Do not force cutting attachment into your work, only the tip of the trimmer line does the cutting
  • If the grass is over 8” tall, work from the top to the bottom in small sections
  • Be sure to cut left to right, this will throw the debris away from you
  • Be sure to move slowly in and out of the cutting area, moving either side to side or front to back
  • Only use your trimmer when the grass and weeds are dry

Decorative Trimming:

  • Rotate the unit so that the cutting attachment is at a 30° angle to the ground and trim around objects
