How to Operate a Poulan String Trimmer
To Start:
- Set the unit on a flat surface
- Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times
- Move the choke lever to the full choke position
- Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and hold through all remaining steps
- Pull the starter rope handle sharply until the engine sounds as if it is trying to start, do not pull rope more than 6 times
- Once engine starts, allow it to run 10 seconds, then move the choke lever to run position allow unit to run for 20 seconds at “run” before releasing the throttle trigger.
To Stop:
- Push and hold the stop switch in the stop position until the engine stops.
- If the engine does not stop, move the choke to the full choke position.
Operating Position:
- Do not run the engine at a higher speed than necessary
- When you run the engine at a lower speed, and less than full throttle, the cutting line will give you the most efficient cut.
- There is also less engine noise and vibration at lower speeds, and the cutting line will last a little longer.
- Be sure to release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to return to its idle speed when you are not cutting
How to advance trimmer line:
- Tap the bottom of the trimmer head on the ground with the engine running at full throttle, 2” of trimmer line will be released
- Be sure to always tap the trimmer head on grass and not black top
Cutting Methods:
- Trimming
- Hold the bottom of the trimmer head 3” above the ground and at an angle
- Allow only the tip of the line to make contact with the grass
- Do not force trimmer line into the work area
- Scalping
- Removes unwanted vegetation down to the ground
- Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3” above the ground and at an angle
- Allow the tip of the line to strike the ground around trees, posts, monuments, etc.
- Be aware that scalping will increase line wear, so be sure to have some extra available if you plan to be doing a lot of scalping
- Mowing
- Can be done in areas a mower may not fit
- Keep the line parallel to the ground, do not press the head into the ground, this will scalp the ground and damage the trimmer
- Sweeping:
- The rotating motion of the line gives off some air, so it can be used to quickly move some debris and clippings off of your sidewalk!
- Hold the line parallel to- and above- the surface that you are going to sweep
- Move the trimmer back and forth in a side to side motion
