How to Install Inner Tubes in Tires

Need to install new inner tubes in your tires? Or maybe it is your first time ever installing them. In either case, here is exactly how you should go about installing new inner tubes in your tires!

What You’ll Need:

  • Valve Core Removal Tool (sometimes this is built into the top of the valve cap)
  • Tire Irons (or other pry tools, NOT SCREWDRIVERS!)
  • Rubber Mallet
  • Non-Compressed Air pump, such as a hand pump or foot pump
  • Pliers

Step 1:

Remove the wheels and release as much air as possible, you can do this by removing the stem core (using a valve core removal tool)

Step 2:

Break the bead loose from the rim – you can usually do this by hitting the sidewall of the tire with a rubber mallet.

Step 3:

Pry the tire bead over the rim – to do this you will want to use a tire iron, once you pry one section of the bead over the rim, leave the tire iron in place and about two inches from the first tire iron, use another, leave it in place and repeat until one side of the tire bead is completely over the rim.

Step 4:

After the front side of the tire is off of the rim, hammer the air valve completely into the tire using a rubber mallet.

Step 5:

Remove the old inner tube with pliers and examine the inside of the tire for damage and remove any sharp objects.

Step 6:

Tighten the valve core with a valve core tool by turning it clockwise and insert the new tube opposite of the way the old tube came out.

Step 7:

Using a hand or foot pump only – add a small amount of air to get some of the folds out of the tube and align the air valve so that it is sticking through the hole in the rim.

Step 8:

Using the prying tools and a mallet stretch the tire bead back over the rim, be sure that the air valve does not fall into the tire or become crooked.

Step 9:

Using the hand or foot pump, slowly inflate the tire, be sure that both tire beads are in the correct position and be sure that the rim line is completely visible around both sides of the tire.

Step 10:

Inflate the tire to 10 lbs. of pressure, deflate, and refill again to 10 lbs. of pressure.

Step 11:

Check the rim line, if the tire is completely centered on the rim, inflate it to the specified pressure on the sidewall of your tire.

Changing tire inner tubes is as easy as that!
