How to Inspect and Replace the Blades of a Honda HRX/HRR Lawn Mower
Sharp and intact blades are one of the key components of a high quality and fast cut. Regularly inspecting and replacing/sharpening blades can potentially shave a few hours off of the time it takes to mow your lawn.
When working with blades, it’s very important to wear protective clothing such as heavy gloves. Keep in mind that broken blades can turn into extremely dangerous projectiles if not replaced!
Don’t attempt to sharpen or fix a blade unless you’re qualified to do so. Keep in mind that blades should be installed as a set and that operating a mower with only one blade can be very dangerous.
Inspection
- Step 1: Turn off the fuel valve.
- Step 2: Detach the spark plug cap from the spark plug.
- Step 3: Place your mower on its side with the fuel cap up to prevent fuel from leaking and the carburetor from flooding.
- Step 4: Inspect the blades. If the blades are bent, cracked, broken, corroded, or excessively rusty, they should be replaced. Dull blades can be sharpened.
Replacement
- Step 1: Use a 14mm socket wrench to remove the two blade bolts. Blocks can be used to prevent the blades from turning while removing the bolts.
- Step 2: Take the blades off.
- Step 3: Remove any dirt, grass, or debris from the blade mounting area. A clean area around the blades will extend the life of your blades and provide you with a higher quality cut.
- Step 4: Using the blade bolts and washers, install your new or sharpened blades back onto the mower.
- Step 5: Torque the blade bolts to 36 ~ 43 ft-lb using a torque wrench. Use wooden blocks to prevent the blades from turning while you tighten the bolts.
