How to Change the Engine Oil of Your Craftsman 46” Automatic Transmission Riding Mower (Hose Model)

To prevent unnecessary engine damage, it is important to maintain the proper quality and amount of oil in your engine. Doing so will ensure that your engine is properly lubricated and protected. Diligently maintaining your equipment will save you repair costs in the long run.

When servicing your tractor, park on a level surface and disengage the mower blades. Lower the attachments all the way down, set the parking brake, and stop the engine. Take out the key and wait for the engine and attachments to completely stop moving before leaving the seat. Remove the spark plug or disconnect the negative battery cable before working on your tractor.

  • Step 1: Let the crankcase warm up by running the engine for a several minutes. This will allow the oil to flow more freely and get rid of dirt and debris that might be settled in the crankcase.
  • Step 2: Open the hood of the tractor and find the oil draining port that’s located on the left side of the engine
  • Step 3: Take the protective cap off of the oil drain valve.
  • Step 4: Remove the oil fill cap and dipstick.
  • Step 5: Place the oil drain hose on the oil drain port.
  • Step 6: Have a container that is suitable for holding at least 2.5 quarts of oil ready.
  • Step 7: Feed the other end of the hose into the container.
  • Step 8: Push the drain valve in slightly and rotate it to the left to start the flow of oil.
  • Step 9: Once the oil has completely finished draining, push the drain valve in and turn it to the right to lock it.
  • Step 10: Cap the end of the oil drain valve.
  • Step 11: Replace the oil filter.
  • Step 12: Refill with new oil.
  • Step 13: Replace the dipstick and add more oil as necessary.
  • Step 14: Put the fill/protective cap back on.
