Cub Cadet XT Series Lawn Tractor: How to Start and Stop the Engine

Starting and stopping your Cub Cadet XT1 or XT2 may be a bit more complicated than you realize. Follow these easy steps to start your tractor right up and avoid damage/frustration while doing so.

When servicing your tractor, park on a level surface and disengage the mower blades. Lower the attachments all the way down, set the parking brake, and stop the engine. Take out the key and wait for the engine and attachments to completely stop moving before leaving the seat. Remove the spark plug or disconnect the negative battery cable before working on your tractor.

Starting

  • Step 1: Put the key in the ignition switch.
  • Step 2: Disengage the PTO.
  • Step 3: Set the parking brake.
  • Step 4: Pull the choke control or throttle/choke control to the choke position if necessary. If the engine is already warmed up, this may not be necessary.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition key to the START. When the engine starts, release the key. Don’t hold the key at the START position for more than ten seconds at once.
  • Step 6: Once the engine has started, move the throttle control into the fast position or move the choke to the off position (don’t leave the choke on while using the tractor).

Stopping

  • Step 1: Disengage the PTO.
  • Step 2: Set the throttle to slow.
  • Step 3: Turn the ignition key to STOP.
  • Step 4: Remove the key from the ignition switch.
