Cub Cadet XT Series Lawn Tractor: How to Remove the Cutting Deck

You may need to remove the cutting deck from your tractor for a variety of reasons. Thoroughly cleaning and inspecting the deck, servicing blades, servicing the tractor itself, and more will potentially require you to remove the deck.

Learn how to properly remove the cutter deck from your Cub Cadet XT1 or XT2 to save yourself time and frustration.

For electric PTO models, skip steps 4, 5, and 6.

  • Step 1: Set the PTO to the disengaged position.
  • Step 2: Engage the parking brake.
  • Step 3: Set the mower deck to its lowest position by putting the lift lever in the bottom notch.
  • Step 4: Loosen the hex screw on the left idler pulley and the flange lock nut on the right idler pulley.
  • Step 5: Find the hex screw that is securing the engine pulley keeper rod to the frame and remove it.
  • Step 6: Remove the rod from the right.
  • Step 7: Use a ½ inch drive ratchet wrench on the tighten setting in a square hole that can be found on the idler bracket. Turn the wrench forward to move the deck drive pulley forward.
  • Step 8: Gently take the belt off of the PTO pulley.
  • Step 9: From the left side of the tractor, remove the bow pin that is on the back left side.
  • Step 10: Repeat step 9 for the right side of the tractor.
  • Step 11: Take the pin out of the front deck lift rod that secures it to the deck. Once it is removed, slide the deck lift rod out of its bracket.
  • Step 12: Move the deck up by setting the lift lever to the highest notch. This will move the deck lift out of the way.
  • Step 13: Move the cutting deck out from underneath the tractor.
