Cub Cadet XT Series Lawn Tractor: How to Inspect and Replace the Blades

If your tractor isn’t cutting as fast or as efficiently as it should, your blades might be damaged, bent, or dull. Servicing your blades when necessary is one of the many important elements of achieving a high quality cut.

Always remember to wear hand and eye protection while servicing or sharpening blades. Before performing general maintenance on your tractor, lower the attachments all the way down, set the parking brake, and stop the engine. Take out the key and wait for the engine and attachments to completely stop moving before leaving the seat. Remove the spark plug or disconnect the negative battery cable before working on your tractor.

  • Step 1: Remove the cutting deck. Flip it upside down so that the blades are exposed.
  • Step 2: Use a block of wood to stop the blade from rotating while you are removing it.
  • Step 3: Remove the nut that is holding the blade on the spindle.
  • Step 4: Remove the blade and inspect it. If it is severely damaged, worn, bent, or dull, it will need to be replaced. If it is dull or imbalanced, it can be sharpened and used.
  • Step 5: Use a blade balancer to test the blade. Balance it accordingly.
  • Step 6: Place the blade onto the spindle assembly.
  • Step 7: Use a block of wood to stop the blade from rotating while you are securing the nut.
  • Step 8: Tighten the nut to secure the blade.
  • Step 9: Remove the wood, flip the deck over, and reinstall it.
