Changing Spark Plugs — one of the cheapest and easiest fixes to solve engine problems.
Whether you just need a refresher on spark plug maintenance, or have never even heard of a spark plug, here is a guide that will tell you what to look for with your spark plugs and how to replace them if necessary.
What You will need:
- Deep Socket
- Extender
- Socket Wrench
- New Spark Plug
- Feeler Gap Gauge
Step 1:
Remove the plug wire
Step 2:
Slide socket onto the plug
Step 3:
Be sure the socket is fully seated on the plug
Step 4:
Loosen the plug with the socket
Step 5:
Remove plug with your fingers (be sure to wear gloves)
Step 6:
Verify the new plug’s gap based on the owner’s manuals specifications
Step 7:
Thread the new plug into the engine by hand until you can no longer turn it
Step 8:
Tighten the plug with a socket an additional ½ to 2/3 of a turn, being careful not to overtighten
Step 9:
Push plug wire back onto plug until you hear and feel a click
That’s all it takes to change your spark plug!

Be sure to check your owner’s manual for exact information about the spark plug you should use for your engine, the manual will also tell you how often you should change your spark plugs, usually it’s about the beginning of every mowing season, or every 100 hours!
